I am so close to resigning from the Union. I don't think that people realise that I spend all my time working there and sit up at night working to represent students better.
And with Preston trying his hardest to fuck people over, it just compounds the problem. I'm not trying to run a fatwah, I am trying to help students. But no. Let's ignore that and blame me because we all love the Saint, don't we?

Are you joking? The saint is hideous. I HATE it. I'm behind you every step of the way, DAve (except on being a Tory and foxhunting:P) but you know I agree with everything you do as SS officer. Keep doing what you're doing; someone needs to stand up to discrimination against minoity groups!

And why can't the press actually report on what's happening?
It's rather frustrating to repeatedly read that the Saint has been shut down.
grr!

I know we have differed over (many) things in the past but - and if you'll forgive the LJ-crashing - I don't think you should resign. If you are believe that you are doing the right thing then you should carry on. I am not questioning the recent decision because I wish to defend The Saint. It's cack and always has been cack. My sole problem is that I think it a little unreasonable to expect a non-Association "thing" to follow Association policy.

I think the arguement is if the offices are in the union building then they should follow the association policy. If they do not adhere to the policies then they were to get offices elsewhere. seems reasonable to me.

Just like Chemsoc, we disaffiliated as our members did not agree with the policy on Nestle. The association gave us the choice, follow our policy or we can not be associated with you.

And mr_comedy, stick in there as it is people like you which make people hold onto hope that the university could care about students rather than money once more in the future. It is harder to find a good person to run things than it is to reinvent the saint as a fair paper.

The Saint is not an affiliated society.

Besides why draw the line at The Saint? Have the people who said such things been disciplined individually? Surely they have been more "discriminatory" than the staff of The Saint who, after all, merely reported what was said.

i didn't mean to make it sound like it was affiliated, but if it is going to share association premises it should respect the policies of the association.

I don't know the facts about the saint, as the content is not aimed at me. It would depend how it was reported - take a racial statement, if it was ""all white people should be hung" said one member of the public" then that is them reporting the discrimination. If it was ""all white people should be hung" said a member of the public, which goes to show that white people deserve to die" then they are being discrimitory themselves.

What was the reasoning behind that?

Was it that ChemSoc wanted to use Nestle products in the Union?

Not to have Nestle products in the Union, it was Nestle products in the Chemsoc Shop and the machines in the Purdie building. They gave the ultimatum of remove nestle products and stay affiliated or keep nestle products and dissaffiliate.

we had a referendum in chemistry and 85% wanted to keep nestle and dissaffiliate and 15% wanted to ban nestle and stay affiliated. KitKats and Yorkie R&B are our best sellers and we will soon be stocking fairtrade to see how well that chocolate does.

Stick in there Dave - you're doing a grand job - although the majority of students don't realise how much effort you put into your work, it's appreciated by those who know.

I will echo Mr Walker's sentiment. To resign now would be a fruitless exercise. You do your job and continue to take pride in your work; in my opinion, you're doing it to the best of your ability and said pride is justified. And I don't just say that about any old person.

And don't let pressure from other people who are not in the know or simply refuse to see the truth prevent you from doing what you know is right. If you did, you'd be letting all those tossers tell you how to do your job (wrongly) and you'd be letting it infinge on your future as regards any other position you'd do an equally good job in. Everyone who matters is behind you...deal with the stupidity and be safe in the knowledge that you are correct.

If there's one thing I've learnt recently, it's that however hard you try at something and it's not going well, however much effort you've put into it, just get out of there and you will feel so much better. If you find yourself dealing with imbeciles the whole time who don't appreciate your work for what it is, then go elsewhere where your work will be appreciated. The Union, whatever anyone may say, is not the be-all and end-all of representation and being able to help other people.

Set your sights higher: you obviously have the energy and determination to help people. There are plenty of other voluntary organisations in the town and in Fife who would be glad of the effort you're willing to put into things.

Why not resign, then?

With a bit of luck, a similar immature idiot will get the job, but at least he'll not work as long and maybe will just leave people alone to read newspapers as they please.

How can you be in any doubt about resigning? I mean, what is so bad about offending dyslexics in print? How will they know?
